Troubleshoot:A program has corrupted default search provider setting for internet explorer. Error

A program has corrupted default search provider setting for internet explorer.

When ever I try to search using my google text box, it brings up stupid stuff that is unrelated to my search.  When I log on I get the message that I posted in the title box which takes me to a place where I can set or rather see my default search engines
but I can't change them.  Google is enabled but google search isn't.  I have tried every thing I know of and I have no idea what to do.
I tried to use the Bing search engine and it even brings back unrelated junk.  As a teacher I need my searches to be fast
and easy.  I have Windows vista, with Windows 7, and the latest add on of '9' What have I done?
