After a Windows Update (XP) my dial-up internet connection hangs up

Earlier this past summer after letting one of my netbook computers do an "update" to Windows my dial-up connection to the internet hangs up.  I didn't troubleshoot it at the time since I had another XP netbook that had not been updated and it continued to
work.  Unfortunately the next time I had a high speed connection available I let it update that netbook also, and now it  hangs up on the dial-up connection.  In both cases I use the same modem.  I have connected that modem to a Windows 7 computer and it dials
and connects to the internet and works just fine.  It is something to do with the Windows Updates to the XP netbooks.  Is there a known problem with this?

...I am a little concerned about all of the specific questions regarding my internet security

You should be concerned!  McAfee (and Norton) applications are notorious for not upgrading (or uninstalling) cleanly.
Note: The following assumes that none of your McAfee subscriptions (or free-trial period) have
ever expired...
[You will want to print these instructions for offline reference.
If a Step says to reboot,
reboot! ]
1.
Download the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool, saving it to your desktop:

http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe
2.
Close all open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar).
3.
Physically disconnect the computer from the internet and any local networks.
4.
Uninstall McAfee Internet Security via Add/Remove Programs & reboot.
5.
IMPORTANT! => Make absolutely certain that the Windows Firewall is enabled (yes, even though you're not connected to the internet).
6.
Double-click on the file you saved in #1 above to run the utility.
Don't TOUCH your keyboard until the run completes, then reboot again.
7.
Reconnect your computer to the internet.
Don't do ANYTHING else online until you've completed ALL of the steps below!
8.
Do a clean install of Norton Internet Security using your CD.  If you purchased your software directly from McAfee, go to
https://home.mcafee.com/Secure/Protected/Login.aspx to log in and download your software.  FOLLOW ALL PROMPTS!
9.
IMPORTANT! => Manually & repeatedly update McAfee Internet Security until you get a "no more updates" or similar prompt.
10.
Open Internet Explorer (only!) to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 & run the Fix It.
11.
IMPORTANT - DON'T SKIP THIS STEP! => Open Internet Explorer (only!) to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 [ignore any DOES NOT APPLY or NOT RECOMMENDED warnings] & run the Fix It in DEFAULT
and then AGGRESSIVE modes.
[1] [2]
12.
Reboot one last time & test.
===================================================
[1] Dismiss (close) the the "automated troubleshooter" Fix It pop-up that appears when you first open the webpage then run Fix It 50202 (in DEFAULT and then AGGRESSIVE modes) instead.
If need be, you can right-click on the Fix It 50202 button & SAVE the download
to your desktop, then run it manually (in DEFAULT and then AGGRESSIVE modes).
[2] Full Disclosure: Running the Fix It in AGGRESSIVE mode will delete your Update History but not the list of Installed Updates.

Don't Download Malware

Where are you getting the download?

There are malicious people who download valid copies of a popular download, modify the file with malicious software, and then upload the file with the same name. Make sure you are downloading from the developer's web page or a reputable company.

Cancel or deny any automatic download

Some sites may automatically try start a download or give the appearance that something needs to be installed or updated before the site or video can be seen. Never accept or install anything from any site unless you know what is downloading.

Avoid advertisements on download pages

To help make money and pay for the bandwidth costs of supplying free the software, the final download page may have ads. Watch out for anything that looks like advertisements on the download page. Many advertisers try to trick viewers into clicking an ad with phrases like "Download Now", "Start Download", or "Continue" and that ad may open a separate download.
