Solution to Problem: win32 application could not write under 'program files' installation directory in win-64?

win32 application could not write under 'program files' installation directory in win-64?

Hello, I have a question regarding running win32 application on win7-64bit.

The 32-bit program I am using needs to output a file and then call another program to process the data.
let's say my program 'abc.exe' outputs '123.txt' and then calls 'xyz.exe' using 'shell (xyz.exe 123.txt)'.

now my problem is, it seems the 123.txt is not created anywhere.
does windows-64 redirects the file writing if it is under 'C:\program files\' directory? or it is because of UAC control? thanks for your time.

Hi
It sounds like the program you are using is not completely compatible with Windows 7.
Have you tried running the program as Administrator? Right click the shortcut that you use to start the program and select the Run As Administrator option.
The Program Files directory is heavily protected in Windows 7.
Any unauthorized writes to a directory in Program Files will be 'virtualized' and redirected to a safe location in your User Files.
After the 123.txt file is created, open the folder under Program Files where that file was supposed to be created.
Look at the Toolbar for a new button named Compatibility Files.
Click that button and it will open the folder where the file was redirected.
This location is usually in C:\Users\your name\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\program name.
(Where your name is the name of the user account you are logged on with and
program name is the name of the program you are using)
Let us know what you find.

Open Action Center by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, and then, under System and Security, clicking Review your computer's status.

Update and run your antivirus software. Windows doesn't come with antivirus software, but Action Center can often monitor the antivirus software that you or your computer manufacturer have installed.
