Troubleshoot:local printer offline?? Error

local printer offline??

I have new HP Pavillion 64 bit computer running Windows 7.
I am unable to print from my
Brother 2170W.  The icon in the tray says the computer is offline.  I have been unable to find anywhere in the printer configuration to set on/offline.  Nor is there any entry of offline printers to delete although two other printers (fax and microsoft xps
are on the list (without my doing anything.
I don't have a fax installed.)

I downloaded the brother driver for this computer and ran set-up in administrator mode.

I am not trying to run this as a network computer -although later it would be nice if I could access wirelessly from laptop.
But getting anything would help.

I have read fixes involving creating a new port-how does one obtain a port number that

belongs to the printer.

Any help would be much appreciated.
