Cannot insert page numbers in header without deleting words in header.

I want to insert page numbers in the header.
When I try, it deletes the words in my header.
I followed the instructions in the help section but it doesn't work.
What am I doing wrong?

If you have inserted a header building block and then try to insert a page number building block (using "Top of Page"), then the page number building block will replace the header building block.
You must use a different approach to insert a page number
in the existing header.
There are two ways to do this:
Double-click the header to open it.
Place the insertion point at the position in the header where you want the page number.
You may need to use built-in or expressly set tab stops to position the insertion point.If you just want a simple page number, press Alt+Shift+P, and you're done.If you want one of the fancy page numbers, select Current Position on the Page Number menu and then select the page number style you want.
Be aware that many of the built-in header building blocks contain content controls.
In order to insert a page number outside the content controls, you may need to use the arrow keys to exit the controls.
In some cases, such as in the Blank (Three Columns)
header, the content controls are overwritten when you type in them, so you can press Alt+Shift+P or insert a page number using Current Position in any of the content controls.

If you failed to fix it, another option is to call Microsoft and walk through the process with a technician. To do this, dial "1-800-936-5700". Explain the error that you received and the steps in the update process during which it was displayed. The technician will be able to walk through the steps from getting a new product key to finishing the installation.
